Senso-ji Temple, perhaps the most famous of Tokyo's temples, is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo, said to have been founded in 628.

The centuries-old temple grounds, the five-story pagoda, and the approach from the Kaminarimon gate to the main hall,

which is crowded with stalls, give the temple an old-fashioned vibrancy and flavor that has historically attracted visitors over the centuries.

The present modern building was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire during World War II.

On the way to the main hall, you will notice incense burning in a large incense burner and smoke wafting in the air.

The smoke from the incense burner is to purify the body of the worshippers.

During the Edo period (1603-1867), the temple flourished as a destination for the wealthy and opulent, with its brothels and playhouses,

and during the Meiji period (1868-1912), it became known as a center of culture typical of Tokyo, with its entertainment halls and theaters.
